- A Chapter in the book called "Medieval Worlds" by Moran Cruz and Gerberding entitled "The Early Medieval Church and the West, 500-800". (Available as a digital copy by following the relevant links on the Library Readings List to be found on the right hand panel.)

By creating such a rigid formal emvironment, Benedicts rule constantly reminds the cenobites of their place in the eyes of god, as a set of limitations are forced upon them in regards to literally every aspect of their lives (no looking up because they are considered unworthy to face heaven, no laughing etc etc). Because of this strict environment and constant emphasis on the importance of living by these unrelenting guidelines, the Benedicts rule enables the monks to "live alone together" as they are able to seek encouragement from other monks who are also living a life of strict faith.
